This essay critically evaluates the role of performance profiling (as outlined by Butler and Hardy, 1996) in the process of performance analysis. The essay begins with a review of performance profiling as outlined by Butler and Hardy (1996), describing how a performance profile is created and how this can be utilized as a tool to facilitate improvements in training and achievement, and then moves on to discuss the various pros and cons of performance profiling, providing a critical evaluation of its role in performance analysis.
Butler and Hardy (1992) illustrated the importance of discovering the athlete’s perspective of their own ideas of self and performance, based on the personal construct theory of Kelly (1955) and Bannister and Fransella (1986), with performance profiles developed for athletes based on the personal constructions of the athlete. The main aim of performance profiling is to aid coaches and psychologists in identifying areas of psychological strengths and weaknesses, in addition to any discrepancies that may exist between the perceptions of the coach/psychologist and the athlete with regards to the athletes performance (Hays, 1998; p. 119). Performance profiles are generally developed for the athlete by first discerning what qualities the athlete perceives to be fundamentally important for an elite performance, and then asking the athlete to rate themselves along these constructs (Hays, 1998). The athlete’s coach/psychologist repeats the same procedure and the profiles that result are compared in order to identify areas of discrepancy and areas that need work, these then forming the basis of a recommended training program based on the techniques that are most likely to work given the situation.
