Supporters of the rejection of legal immigration argue that immigrants can cause great burdens to social welfare systems in America. This argument is not objective, because it does not see that legal immigrants have contributed more to social welfare system while receiving less social welfare. As noted by professor Borjas (2011), American social welfare systems have benefited greatly from the contributions made by legal immigrants, who have provided considerable taxes and contributions for the American governments and welfare systems. Instead of causing more burdens to social welfare systems, legal immigrants are the major forces that contribute to the social welfare improvement of America. Other supporters of the rejection of legal immigration hold that legal immigrants are seizing job opportunities from American whites in job markets and they have resulted in the decrease of wages. Many white Americans believe that the wages have been reduced due to the presence of legal immigrants who are willing to work for less-paid jobs. This argument misrepresents the realities regarding the role of legal immigrants in American economy. As observed by professor Borjas (2011), “immigrants face tough challenges because of factors such as a lack of English proficiency, lack of knowledge of the labor market and lack of knowledge about geographic locations best suited for job opportunities” (p. 98). Thus, instead of seizing job opportunities from white Americans, legal immigrants are at a disadvantageous position in job markets. Meanwhile, the presence of legal immigrants also contribute to the development of more highly paid jobs for white Americans, such as the jobs of management.
