Hamlet, perhaps Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy, explores the inner torment of a man seeking to atone for the sins of his uncle and mother. Hamlet is an introspective figure caught up in a revenge plot rather than a heroic figure. Michael Neill has argued that the revenge genre served as a compensation for lost Catholic ritual, acting as “a response to a particularly painful as pect of the early modern reimagining of death … the wholesale displacement of the dead from their familiar place in the order of things by the Protestant abolition of purgatory and ritual intercession.”[9] Proposing revenge tragedy as a reinterpretation of original sin, Neill argues that the genre represents the attempt to come to terms with the belief that children inherit a sin which is both the cause and consequence of parental sexuality. Hamlet is clearly motivated by the Christian belief that children inherit a stain which results from parental sin, a sin which he himself is doomed to repeat. In Thomas Browne’s Pseudodoxia Epidemica, a seventeenth-century encyclopaedia meant to draw truth and reason from scientific enquiry, Browne describes contemporary interpretations of the Fall as an event which is both the source and model of all human flaw.
